Farmers Market Grand Opening
We opened the Oakland Avenue Farmers Market on May 14, 2011 with a goal of developing jobs and increasing access to sustainable grown fruit and produce to a vulnerable community. Looking at options for food in our community there was a need for improvement. We realized we could provide that improvement by opening a farmers market and bringing other growers and products locally produced to our community.
We reached out to the Eastern Market Corporation and was invited to join the Detroit Community Markets. With the Detroit Community Markets we received operational and marketing support which has contributed to our sustainability. We are an USDA Approved vendor to accept Snap Benefits, Double Up Food Bucks which are offered by the Fair Food Network, Project Senior Fresh Coupons and WIC benefits.
Our farmers market has many activities during the season for community engagement such as cooking demonstrations offered by the Henry Ford Health System and Michigan State Extension, Detroit Fire Department, Artist Festival, Senior Exercise, Youth Activities and so much more.
